This will be the last day we will post activities onto the blog. From Monday all activities will be posted through Seesaw. Please ensure you have set up your Seesaw account for your child. We will still be posting similar activities to those that have appeared on the blog.

Activity one – phonics:

Today we will be looking at both sounds that we have revised this week /b/ and /u/.

Find the words that you have been using this week. Put them in a pile. Take it in turns to take the top word off the pile, say the words and blend them together. If you get it right, you keep it. If you get it wrong, it goes to the bottom of the pile (adults please make mistakes so your child can correct you! They love it!).

Once you have gone through the words, allow your child to place words around the home for you to find. Get them to ‘help’ you find the words and sound them out, again mistakes from adults are good as your child can correct you, which means they are sounding out, blending and recognising when the word is incorrect. If they don’t pick up on your mistake, check the word for yourself, maybe saying one of the sounds incorrectly.

When looking at the words, can they spot the /b/ and /u/ sounds?

Activity two – snappy maths:

Today we are looking at and exploring the number 20. The children know that 20 is makde up of two tens and zero ones.

Use the tens frames from earlier in the week to make 20 using objects from around the house. How many empty spaces are there? Why aren’t there any spaces?

Using the 20 objects, your child is going to practice sharing them between different amounts of people of toys. Remember, every toy has to have the same amount.

If you share between 2, how many does each toy get?

If you share between 3, how many does each toy get?

If you share between 4, how many does each toy get? etc.

Activity three – what would you like to know?

As we start looking more at animals, which animals would you like to find out more about?

Make a list of animals that you like and would like to learn about.

Talk to your child about why they would like to learn about that animal.

Activity four – finding out:

Get your child to ask the people in your home:

Why do people like animals so much?

Record the answers to the questions however you want to.

Here are your activities for today:

Activity one – phonics:

Even though this is one of the five vowels it is often forgotten. We will be spending the next few days focusing on this sound.

Write the following words on individual pieces of paper (you will need two copies of the words) – fuss, hug, bus, bug, tub, dull, luck, puff. You can start with using one set and playing the game from Monday, where you turn over a word and work out what it says. After, using both sets, play a matching game where you have to find and read two words the same to win them.

Tricky words:

Practice reading the tricky words learnt within sentences, highlighting or underlining the tricky words:

We can go to the park.

You and me are at the swing.

No you cannot go into the shop.

Activity two – snappy maths:

Today we are going to be looking at the number 18. The children know that 18 is made up of one ten and eight more.

Find 18 objects around the home and put them into the tens frame made earlier in the week. How many empty spaces are there in the frame?

After, investigate whether 18 objects can be split in half. Using the objects from the tens frame, or anything else in the house, your child should see if 18 can be halved (splitting into two groups). Once completed, they could investigate whether other numbers up to 18 can be halved.

Activity three: be funny!

For activity three, we would like you to learn a joke! And the funnier the better!

Activity four: help Joe Wicks:

Joe Wicks has been filming PE sessions for children since we went into lockdown. But now he needs our help.

Your challenge is to come up with a sequence of three exercises that Joe could use in his workouts. Think about an exercise for the arms, legs, tummy, etc.

Take some photos of your different exercises so we can all practice.

Here are you activities for today:

Activity one – phonics:

Yesterday we looked at the sound /b/ and read words containing that sound. Today we are going to make up some silly sentences using our tricky words and words containing /b/.

We are going to start with a sentence then change the words to see how silly we can make it.

Here is the starter sentence:

We can go on the bus.

Write the words on individual cards. Also write the words bug, brick, bed, bin, jump, hop, skip.

Start by reading the starter sentence until your child understands it and can read it themselves. Swap one word with one of the extras written. Reread the sentence – does it make sense? Is it silly? Continue to swap words around, ensuring your child reads the words and understands what the sentence says.

Extension – add in the word ‘and’ so the starter sentence has ‘We can go on the bus and …’ then your child can extend it by making it silly!

Once you have had a go at reading silly sentences, try writing one of your own using the word ‘bus’ or ‘bug’ in the sentence.

Activity two – snappy maths:

Today we are going to be looking at the number 17. The children know that 17 is made up of one ten and seven more.

Numberblock 17 is an artist and likes to paint 17 pictures. Choose an object and see if you can draw or paint it 17 times. Cut up the pictures and put them into your tens frames from yesterday. How many empty spaces are there in the frame?

Ensure your child is counting the pictures correctly.

Activity three – building towers:

For this activity you need objects from around your home and it can be anything. The challenge is to race someone at home to see who can build the tallest tower. Here are some ideas of what you could build towers out of, but you can be as creative as you like:

Give yourself a time limit and build! When the time is up work out who’s tower is the tallest, shortest or come in the middle. It is important to use the correct language with your child. How could you measure the towers to find out how tall they really are?

Activity four – listening:

This activity involves using listening ears. Give them a wiggle before you start to make sure they are ready.

With your child you are going to listen to the sounds around you and write down what they are. This could be completed indoors, in the garden or while undertaking daily exercise (keeping to social distancing). Compare the lists you have made.

Your child could help you to write some of the words in the list, thinking about the sounds they can hear.

Here is some of the work the children in Year R have completed today:

Maya in Fir Base won the competition at home to build the tallest tower in two minutes. Maya used her teddies and mum used boxes, but Maya was quicker and managed to balance her teddies! She also worked on her phonics, reading words with /b/ in them and making up silly sentences.

Hello Year R.

This week we will be posting 4 activities a day to help you with your learning. One will be phonics, one will be snappy maths and two will link to our project or other areas of the Year R curriculum. Activity one – phonics:

This sound often gets confused with /d/ so we are going to focus on this sound for a few days and the shape of the letter.

Write the following words on individual pieces of paper – bed, bug, bus, bib, big, best, block, brick. Turn them upside down. Take turn to choose a word and work out what it says. If you say the word right, you get to keep it. Repeat the activity but this time place the words around the home. Collect one word at a time and work out what it says. The winner is the one with the most words.

Tricky words:

Play a tricky word hunt in books you have at home, or tricky words written on cards. Remember, these words cannot be sounded out and just have to be remembered. The tricky words we have covered so far are: go, no, to, into, I, the, he, she, we, me, be, you, are. Later in the week we will be reading these words in sentences.

Activity two – snappy maths:

Today we are going to be looking at the number 16. The children know that 16 is made up of one ten and six more.

Thinking about the number 16, make collections of 16 objects. Choose objects that vary in size so when they are lined up they look different. How can you find out if all the collections have 16?

One way of doing this is to use a tens frame.

Tens frames can be used to show how a number is made up. Make your own tens frame and place the objects in the frame. How many empty spaces are there in the frame? Is this always the same?

Activity three – playing games:

Choose a game you and your family like to play and play it together. Think about the rules for the game. Why do we need rules? Can we change the rules?

Let us know what the game is and who won!

Activity four – All about me:

For this activity we would like you to draw a picture of yourself and colour it in using the correct colours. Add your name to your picture. Once you have your picture, think about what you like to do and write these things around it. Is there something new you like to do?

Send us a photo of your picture so we can add it to the blog.

That is the activities for today. During this week your child’s teacher will either phone or email the children and find out what they have been doing. We will also be emailing you a code for the online learning platform ‘Seesaw’ which we will be using for daily learning from Monday 27th April. Please look out for the email so you can set up your child’s Seesaw account during the week.

Hello Year R.

We hope you all had a great Easter Break and have found ways to enjoy the sun safely, despite the current restrictions.

This is the curriculum bulletin for the next project: World of Animals. This will form the basis of the learning activities that will be posted everyday. Once again, if you have any queries about the learning, please email us and we will support you.

Well, it feels very strange but it is actually the final Friday of this half term. We now break up for the Easter holidays for two weeks.
Your daily challenge for today is to share an activity that you have done since you have been at home. There are some amazing ideas around at the moment and we want to see what you have enjoyed most.

Hello Year R!

I hope you are all well. As the sun is shining I thought I would post an extra challenge for you to do. In our last project we looked at shadows so thought we could have a challenge linked to them.

Have a look at the picture below:

Using objects from around the home, place them on some paper then using pens, crayons, paint, draw round the outline of the objects then fill it in.

Do the shadows look like the objects?
