Week 3 phonics

This week in phonics the children learnt the sounds /y/ and /qu/. They learnt the sounds using words in sentences, such as:

The yucky yak had a yam.

The quick queen can run.

To write /y/ we say, “Down the yak’s horn, up the yak’s horn and curl under his head”.
To write /qu/ we say, “round the queens head, down her straight hair and give it a flick. Down the umbrella, across the puddle, up the umbrella and down”.

The children also learnt the trick word ‘you’ and learnt to recognise the word within sentences:

You can go to the shop.

Can I go with you?

If you have any questions about phonics or reading please speak to your child’s class teacher.
