Week 6 phonics

In our last week before the Christmas holidays, we introduced the children to the phonemes: /c/ /k/ /ck/.

To write /c/ we say: “curl around the caterpillar”

To write /k/ we say: “down the kangaroo’s back, up round his head and kick out his feet”.

We introduced the tricky word ‘go’ with the action of pointing away.

We worked on segmenting and blending words and introduced the children to the term ‘digraph’ where two letters make one sound, as in /ck/.

Words we blended include:

cop

kit

kid

kick

pack

Week 5 phonics

This week in phonics we have been looking at the phonemes:

To write the sound /g/ we say “round the girls head, down the long hair, curl and give the curl a flick”

To write the sound /o/ we say “all around the orange”.

Words we have looked at this week that we can mash and bash include:

got

dog

dig

gap

rag

We introduced the tricky word ‘no’ using pictures so children could come up with sentences containing ‘no’.

Phonics, week 4

This week in phonics we have been looking at the phonemes /m/ and /d/.

To write /m/ we say “we go down the mountain, up the mountain and over, up the mountain and over”

To write the letter /d/ we say ” around the dinosaurs bottom, up his long neck and down to his feet”

The words we have been using this week are:

map

dip

dad

mad

and

pad

sad

We have also introduced the tricky word ‘the’ and writing the word in context, such as

in the pan

Food is in the pan.

By putting the word in context gives children meaning.

Shapes everywhere!

This week Year R childrn have been learning about shapes, describing shapes and making pictures with shapes.

We asked them questions about why they had chosen the shape.

Week 3 phonics

This week the children have been learning the phonemes /i/ and /n/.

Down the insects body and a dot for its head.

We have been continue to practice mashing and bashing sounds to build words. These words include:

tap pat tin pin sit tip

Please continue to play ‘sound hunt’ in your child’s reading book and fins any tricky words that are on the bookmark.

Rescuing evil pea!

This week children in Year R have been trying to think of ways that they can rescue Evil Pea from the poisonous jelly!

We came up with plans then tried them out, adapting our plans if they weren’t working.

We had a great time and managed to get most of the peas out of the jelly!

How can we get the evil peas out of the jelly without touching it?

Celebration time

Elm Base had a surprise for celebration time this week – they watched as magic happened in front of their eyes!

Using a plate, some skittles and some hot water, a rainbow appeared on the plate before their eyes!

We talked about what was happening and why it was happening.

The children couldn’t believe what they were seeing!

Phase 2 phonics – week 2

This week we will be introducing two new sounds in class, as well as revising the two we learnt last week. We will be applying the sounds to make simple words which we will be mashing and bashing to read.

Here are the two sounds we are learning this week:

To write the letter we say ‘down the tower, across the tower’.

To write the letter we say ‘down the pirate’s plait, up and around the pirates face’.

With the phonemes we have introduced so far, we are starting to create simple words which we are mashing and bashing together, such as:

sat

tap

tan

pat

Phase 2 phonics – week 1

This week we have started to introduce the children to their phonics sounds.

Here are the two sounds we are learning this week:

To write the letter we say ‘slither down the snake’.

To write the letter we say ‘around the apple and down the leaf’.

We are focusing on words and objects that begin with these sounds (initial sound).

We have also introduced the term ‘phoneme’ to the children, explaining it is the sound the letter makes.

With your child you can use their reading books to hunt to sounds. See how many of each sound you can find in the environment too!

Pirates!!

This week we are learning about pirates.

We read the story ‘Goodnight Pirate’ and learnt lots of new pirate words – scallywag, booty, spyglass, cutlass.

The boy in the story uses a treasure map to find the ‘booty’. This inspired the children to make their own treasure maps and create their own treasure islands, inside and in the gardens. We thought about where the features of the map were positioned using words such as behind, in front, next to, on top, under, between. We dressed up as pirates and told pirate jokes!
